John Guare's new play A Free Man of Color will make its way to Lincoln Center Theater this fall, according to The New York Times. The show, which was expected to star Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright (who appeared together at the Public and on Broadway in Topdog/Underdog) and be directed by George C. Wolfe, was originally slated to debut last season at the Public Theater, but was canceled due to "funding issues." The play will arrive at Lincoln Center in fall 2010 with Wolfe at the helm.
Wolfe and Guare have reportedly revamped the show for its debut. A Free Man of Color tells the story of the Louisiana Purchase, with its leading players mingling in 1802 New Orleans with characters like Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson.
In an email to the Times, Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis said, "John Guare has written a beautiful and important play. I am very happy it's being produced; audiences should get a chance to see it."
Casting, dates and a theater for the production have not been announced.
